Through our long term association with DTEI, Totalspace Design has had the opportunity to work in many of our states schools undertaking extensions, alterations and upgrades.
In all cases, we take care to place the individual requirements of the users first, whilst still being aware of the Department of Education, Children Services and DTEI’s guidelines and regulations. Value for money and speed of delivery are also high on our list of priorities.

Our work for various government departments over the years has seen us deal in a diverse range of projects. Our staff’s previous experience working for the Government in the area of minor works and office accommodation, ensures that we are well aware of the standards, regulations and particular requirements of Government projects.
Much of our work has involved office accommodation, particularly with SA Health Commission, Department for Correctional Services, Department for Family and Community Services, Courts Administration Authority, Public Trustee, Department for Industrial Affairs, examples of these appear later.

Michael Dodd gained significant experience whilst managing office accommodation projects for DTEI’s Office Accommodation Division for six years.
This coupled with Diana Brown’s expertise in systems screen design, has proved invaluable in providing similar services to numerous clients.
Many of these projects were undertaken whilst floors were occupied, requiring meticulous planning and coordination of services.
Totalspace Design has built a significant relationship with a pool of competent contractors ensuring your office refurbishment will happen with a minimum of fuss, cost and time.
Our expertise allows us to coordinate all aspects of a full office fitout or refurbishment including furniture, screens, joinery, window treatments, signage and graphics, floor coverings, colour schemes, electrical, data communications, fire and security, removalists....as well as undertake all the design, documentation, tender administration and overall project management.
Examples of some larger projects:
- Brief development, sketch designs, documentation and construction supervision of alterations to all floors of the Commission’s head office in the Citi Centre Building. Individual project budgets varied from $100,000 to $300,000.
- Brief development, sketch designs and presentation drawings for proposed new building and refurbishment and extension to existing building for a joint facility incorporating The Commission and FACS, now known as FAYS.
- Feasibility, design, documentation and management of alterations to four floors of the SA Police headquarters in Flinders St.
- Documentation and management of new accommodation for Department of Human Services, Radiation Protection Branch.
- Redesign of four floors of Public Trustee Building for Correctional Services.
systems screens and furniture
At present, there are over 100 types of systems screens on the market, all with slightly different characteristics and qualities.
Totalspace Design’s interior designer, Diana Brown, has over 25 year’s experience in the field of office accommodation and furniture. Diana’s knowledge of systems screens and furniture is vast, having been involved in the original design and implementation of a screen system with a previous employer.
Our knowledge of DTEI Office Accommodation guidelines, and Occupational Health Welfare and Safety Regulations ensure that your office fitout is satisfactory in every respect.
Completed projects involving primarily systems screens and furniture include:
- SA Health Commission in Citi Centre Building and Grenfell Street.

As more products are developed and the market for floor materials become more competitive, there has been a huge influx of new interesting textured and coloured floor materials available. It is an opportunity that Totalspace Design has relished, to utilise flair, imagination and bold concepts to add a new dimension to foyers, reception areas, waiting and office areas. So much so that our design for the Office of Multicultural and International Affairs has been featured in a brochure by a manufacturer to promote the use of carpet tiles in offices.

Over the last couple of years, Totalspace Design has been involved in various minor works at the Repatriation General Hospital. Upgrades to wards, new buildings, alterations and upgrades to accommodation, new colour schemes and design of built-in furniture and systems screens layouts.
Of late, Totalspace Design has been involved in an extensive feasibility study on the Repatriation General Hospital Emergency Department, looking at new designs for its extension in the future. We have also been primary consultants for the upgrade of and alterations to the main Reception and Front entrance of the hospital.
We have also had a longstanding relationship with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, undertaking a major upgrade at their Enfield facility, and undertaking consultation for a major extension to their facilities at Modbury.

The staff of Totalspace Design have all had experience in heritage projects over their careers, and this has been carried through into their work to date.
Work in buildings such as Parliament House, Sir Samuel Way Building, MultiCultural and Ethnic Affairs Building, Semaphore Institute, Torrens Building*, Supreme Court, Adelaide Art Gallery*, Edmund Wright House*, Palmer Place, Carclew, Fort Glanville ensures that Totalspace Design have a sound knowledge in the particular complexities involved in dealing with the states Heritage listed buildings.
Over time we have established a good working relationship with the DTEI Heritage Unit, ensuring that at all times we are achieving a satisfactory result for all parties.
